Welcome to another fascinating episode of "Brews & Brains," hosted by the charismatic RJ Tuhin. This time, we have a special guest, Narayan Manepally, the visionary behind Geist Brewing Company, a trailblazer in the craft beer scene based in Bangalore. Geist Brewing Company has multiple outlets in Bangalore, including Old Madras Road, Rajajinagar, Orion Mall, and Bhartiya Mall of Bengaluru. Their beers are available in cans all over Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pondicherry, with plans for further expansion. Geist is renowned for its expertly crafted beers. Narayan Manepally's journey into the world of beer brewing began in an unexpected way. Originally an Electrical Engineer working with Intel in the USA, Narayan was part of a group of engineers in Portland in 1993. Finding himself in a new city with few friends, he joined his colleagues in brewing beer at home to bond with them. This hobby, nurtured in his garage, quickly evolved into a passion. Upon returning to India, Narayan noticed a lack of variety in the local beer market. Seeing the potential for introducing global beer styles, he decided to establish a crafted beer business in India. The path to creating Geist Brewing Company was filled with challenges, including navigating outdated British-era laws that prevented brewing and serving beer under the same roof. Despite these obstacles, Narayan's determination paid off. Initially, he partnered with a Belgian brewery, importing high-quality beers to India and paying hefty taxes. Realizing that sustainable success required brewing in India, he persevered. Setting up a brewery in India was a monumental task. The government initially resisted due to a 100-year-old British law. However, Narayan started "reverse outsourcing" by partnering with a Belgian brewery, despite suffering losses due to high taxes. The breakthrough came when Rockman's Beer Island opened the first microbrewery in Gurgaon, setting an example for other states. Bangalore's "Beer Club" then obtained its first license for a microbrewery. Narayan partnered with other microbreweries in Bangalore before finally securing his own manufacturing license and opening his brewery on Old Madras Road. In this episode, Narayan provides a detailed explanation of the beer-making process. Beer is classified into two categories: lager and ale. Ale, which started in the UK, is a low-carbonation beer fermented at low temperatures. Lager, on the other hand, is highly carbonated and produced from bottom-fermenting yeast. They discuss the function of hops, with 40% of the world’s hops made in the USA, and other major producers include Germany and the Czech Republic. Interestingly, hops can also be grown in Indian states like Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh. Narayan emphasizes the importance of yeast, a living organism that requires respect and careful control to produce stunning beer. Crafted beer contains residual yeast, providing vitamins like B6 and B12, as well as magnesium. The conversation also covers the color, smell, taste, and types of beer tasting notes. The history of IPA is also explored, highlighting its British origins and connection with the East India Company. Narayan acknowledges Vijay Mallya's contributions to the Indian beer industry, particularly for allowing draught beer to be sent directly from breweries to retail outlets without going through a government warehouse. This move significantly boosted Bangalore's beer culture. They also discuss the rise of tap rooms in India, with Bangalore boasting around 86 microbreweries and about 300 across the country. Narayan envisions India becoming a world leader in craft beer, akin to Germany and the USA, given its resources and entrepreneurial spirit. Beer brings happiness, Narayan believes, as it is the result of someone’s effort, knowledge, and wisdom. Additionally, Narayan shares his love for golf, reminiscing about the best game he ever played while buzzed with beer. He discusses how much beer is healthy to consume, the misconception that dark beer is stronger than light beer, and the myth that beer cures dehydration.
